Learning Prezi Tips and Tricks & our first workshop

Written on February 17th, 2009, by adam

We did a 3 hours workshop last week for T-Systems Hungary – and we learned a lot ourselves! Learning the tools in Prezi went like a charm, and created a really good and playful atmosphere.

pdfg21

I did a fast Prezi Quick Manual.pdf (2 MB) that shows the basic parts in a printable form (using screensteps). This worked well to get through the basics.

However, when we got into telling stories visually, with zoom, that was another thing. I have a background in architecture and new media arts, and visual communication has always been present in my work. So, what I like in Prezi, the complete freedom, was clearly a burden at the workshop. Of course, being there, we could talk a lot about good use of zooming, and tell what was missing.

But we can do better – and offer two simple solutions

We have a very nice ongoing discussion about Templates here: http://blog.prezi.com/?p=29 which are clearly needed, and will offer great help IMO.

At the same time I also think we could collect a few good ideas how to utilize zooming for communication, which can be learned quickly. I created a Prezi with some of the tricks I use myself. Please have a look, and share with us what you think!

tips and tricks shot

http://prezi.com/9303

Ideas please!

But these are only my practices… What other good use did you find for zooming? Can you please share some of your ideas, your Prezi here?

We can add it all up, keep only the good ones, and place it into the Learn section on Prezi.com!

Please, portuguese(br) manual, to potencial use to the prezi. It’s fantastic. Thanks!

    • Zoltan Radnai says:

      Dear Carlos,

We are more than open to have a manual in Protugese, but since none of us knows the language unfortunately, we ask our user’s help to create one. Would you be interested? (We already have manuals and user created guides in many alanguages and will post them soon on the Learn page). If you would have free time and energy to input here, please drop me an email to radnaizoltan_at_gmail_dot_com. Thanks!

  2. Raphink says:

    Hi there,

As I was watching the tutorial, it mentions that you can import PDF or SWF files to have greately scalable objects. Do you also support SVG files?

    Thank you

  3. Alwena says:

    Hi!

When I use prezi desktop (trial version) and I export the presentation to my computer I’m unable to re-open the presentation from my computer and therefore can’t email it to someone else. Please help! I’d like to use the software on Friday for a very important presentation on someone else’s computer! I have tried to “extract all” with the files but once that has been completed it doesn’t allow me, or give me the option to open the file.

    Thank you!

    • Zoltan Radnai says:

      Hi,

So you have successfully downloaded and extracted the files? can you see the .exe or the prezi file in the folder? (PC or Mac) What happens when you double click them?

  4. Alwena says:

    Hi there,

I think I’ve sorted it – it seems to work after downloading an update to desktop.

    Thanks!

  5. mo says:

    hi,
I wanted to know how to make videos?
where do you get the file from of how do you upload it?
If you have to change the file how do you do it?

  6. Matt Priest says:

I just showed off my first Prezi for class last week and it turned out quite well, if I do say so myself. In the future I was wondering if there was a way to hide frames. I noticed in the Lokloq prezi that they zoomed where there was no apparent frame. How did they do that? How can I do that? My only thought is filling a text box with spaces so no text appears and linking a path to this empty text box. Is there an easier way?

  7. William says:

I’m thinking you can do a book report based on Attack of the Mutant

  8. julia says:

    PREZI IS DA BOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Carlos says:

    Hi,
    This solution is really amazing.
    A newbie problem:

Sometimes I can’t see an image that I uploaded. I must repeat the process.
    What have I done wrong?

    • Zoltan Radnai says:

yeah, we are aware of that. Could you please send yur prezi URL, so we cold analyze the issue. Thanks!

  10. mike d says:

please please please, someone tell me an easy way to combine elements from one prezi into another. the copy/paste/duplicate suggestions are not working.

should i log on from a pc and try it there? (I am mac) or is there another way? I would rather not re-upload 100 art files.

    thank you!!!!!!!!! love prezi.

    • Zoli Radnai says:

      Dear Mike,

Right now you cannot copy/paste elements from one prezi to another. What you can do is duplicating the existing prezi by “save as”, delete certain parts then add new content. This way you can keep your original file while having the opportunity to rebuild the prezi adding new elements, deleting those that you don’t need any more.

  11. bshop says:

    Hi,

I’m working on a prezi presentation but i’d like to know if i can hide the frames during the presentation ? I didn’t find any solution and for me this is a problem because i use a lot of frames to zoom in or out a specific area and all these frames obstructing for my presentations…
    thank you for your help

  12. Mike Winters says:

Hi i love prezi and it is an amazing tool. I think that you should try to design it as an iPhone app that way people can work on their Prezi wherever, whenever

  13. Javier says:

When will Prezi zupport music? Mp3?

  14. Oliver Tillmann says:

    Hey there,

how is it possible to adjust wich part will be zoomed. I have a picture an some text right beside it. I can either zoom the picture or the text but not that both is seen in presentation. I am not so happy with making everything a frame. Any chance for me?

    • Zoli Radnai says:

      Hi,

Frames are for grouping objects and create “pods” that can be zoomed upon together. You can add the path to the frames. Also, you can add a photo, image, animation, textbox on a frame, and move the frame under the new layer that covers it. This way, the frame will be literally invisible, still can be marked by the path.

  15. NeilHB says:

    Hi

The project/time planner shown in Prezi.com/9303. Please can you advise me which program this is. I really like the look of it!

Love Prezi btw . bloody xlnt!

    Thanks

  16. NeilHB says:

Hi – When setting a path it would be fantastic to be able to click on the number and get it input capable and then specify the number of seconds for that transition on autoplay. It would make autoplay much more useable as at present the fixed timings are impractical.

    Thanks

    X Prezi!

    • Zoli Radnai says:

Great idea, thanks! We are already aware of this request you are not the only one who wishes to have an adjustable time feature in Prezi. We always consider user suggestions when developing, but cannot promise you anything right now.

  17. Hi, I really like prezi from a presentation point of view and have a couple of questions regarding the use of presentations for online marketing:
    - can I add sound?
    - can I embed a presentation in ma website (if so, what file-format?
    - can I import a presentation into youtube / other video plattforms?

    Thanks, Christian

  18. Zsombor László says:

    Hi Zoli,

I think the pixelating could be solved via this:

    http://www.ted.com/talks/blaise_aguera_y_arcas_demos_photosynth.html

As I have heard you are already cooperating with TED, so it would be neat to see this idea in prezi.

    • Zoli Radnai says:

      Hi,

Thanks for the feedback and the idea!
We don’t have intentions to develop prezi to that direction. Since Prezi is a presentation tool and not an image viewer, it was not meant to handle huge images and ultra high resolution stuff. That is a different market, different business. With the right resolution, you can avoid pixelated images in Prezi right now as well. I also agree there is development to do here. Good news is, we never stop :)

  19. Fabio says:

    Great tool!
Could be useful a progres bar in order to know how long the presentation is

  20. adam says:

    Hi NeilHB

the project/time chart was handmade in adobe illustrator – quite hard work…
    (sorry for he bad news)

    Adam

  21. Vong says:

How did you get the square frame to be dark black with the text on top? All the styles I see with white backgrounds only have grey frames. I know I import a black object that looks like a frame to get the same effect, but I was wondering whether there’s a style that has these black frames built in.

  22. Ricky says:

What about allowing .jpg and other images/graphics to become the backdrop or background for the prezi? I.E. If I put a still image into my prezi and place text and other things over it so now my image is the background on prezi. A simple text overlay.

  23. Molly says:

One thing I can’t seem to figure out is how to go back to the main Prezi page or my home page once I’m done looking at a presentation, specifically after viewing a tutorial presentation. How does that work?

  24. Nick says:

Is there any way you can show hot to add a sound file so it plays with each click. Just as you did in the explanation “how to use Prezi”.

My professor showed this app to me and I thought it was awesome. I am going to use it for my final project.

    Thanks,
    Nick

  25. Jordan says:

Love Prezi. Questions on pricing model. I only do maybe 1 to 2 presentations in ppt a year. How do you justify the pricing? A person that does 2000 ($59.00) per year, pays the same as the person that does 2?

Should there be a per presentation option? Just saying.

    • Zoli Radnai says:

Hi it’s the same price for a Laptop Computer or a for those people who are heavy users and for those who only use it to create a Christmas card once a year as well. The good news with Prezi is that you can use the public version every time for free. So for you, maybe this account fits best.

  26. Beatrice Broderick-Auger says:

I wont to up load a video , is it possible and how?
    TKS

  27. Marek says:

Great tool – but until you can customise the fonts and colours, it will have limited appeal to serious users. I would definitely look at purchasing for my company if it had this feature in the future. It would be very cool if you can also add transparency and a show/hide feature – i.e. – an overview shows a title in large letters and then as you zoom in it fades out to reveal the small text detail underneath

    • Zoli Radnai says:

Thanks for your words! We are aware of the feature request about full customization, and all I can tell you right now is that we keep our ears open to our users requests when developing. For companies we also recommend our fully customized, standalone, branded style for some extra charge. If you are interested, please send us an email-

  28. Denise says:

    Hey there….
Is there a way to add video, sound tracks or any type of audio/audio clips to my preso?

  29. What about embedding a YouTube video instead of uploading one?

    • Zoli Radnai says:

I have already answered to your previous comment. On the other hand, YouTube videos not always meet the needs of presenters. If a video is not on YT, why should they upload it there and then to Prezi?

  30. What about embedding YouTube video instead of uploading FLV or SWF video files?

    • Zoli Radnai says:

We are aware of this request, you are not the only one who have mentioned it . Our ears are open and we always listen to our user’s needs when developing. I cannot tell you deadlines or release dates though, also cannot promise to develop every feature request.

  31. Allan Stanford says:

One feature that would make prezi a lot less frustrating would be the ability to flatten areas into an image. If I spend a lot of time creating a complicated frame and then decide that it needs to be somewhere else, I have to move and rotate every single element. If, however, I could create it and then merge it all into one element or “freeze” it, then it would protect my time investment. I could, of course, screen shot it and then upload it as an image, but this reduces the quality and makes it pixelated at different zooms.
If there is already a workaround for this, I’d love some advice. Thanks.

    • Zoli Radnai says:

Hi, there is a very simple solution to this. You can group select whole prezis, or parts of them and move/rotate/scale together by pressing and holding the shift key on your keyboard, while dragging rectangle around the required objects with the mouse.

  32. adam says:

    Hi Allan,

You can select multiple items easily – just hold down the shift key on your keyboard, and drag the mouse in place mode.

This way you can move, rotate, scale the whole selection at once

    Best wishes,
    Adam

  33. Chris Boyce says:

Due to years of conditioning, I tend to “think in PowerPoint” when constructing my message. I am still getting my head round your tool – I think I love it, but I need time to test it out for real.

I strongly support the request for more (perhaps not full) customisation. Clients who want house styles/fonts will be put off prezi until these are available.

My biggest concern (if I understand the editing process correctly) is the inability to “build up” slides. Zooming off to other areas of the workspace is new, exciting and adds context in many situations. But there are times when I just want to stay still and have new elements appear as I work through my script. Is this possible? On the roadmap?

Thanks for your innovative approach… Chris@nothing-works.co.uk

    • Zoli Radnai says:

      hi, thank for your interest!

      1. – you can build “slides” we call those “pods” or groups in Prezi by drawing a frame, and inserting a number of data inside. you can then add the path to the frame to put the whole thing fullscreen, or zoom into details. Please check our showcase for inspiration.

      2. – Rightn now you can choose from the given prezi styles. For companies or on demand, we can create branded styles as well for an extra charge.

  34. Harold Toups says:

In reference to question by Vong:

“How did you get the square frame to be dark black with the text on top? All the styles I see with white backgrounds only have grey frames. I know I import a black object that looks like a frame to get the same effect, but I was wondering whether there’s a style that has these black frames built in.”

One way to do it (for example, in the Glossy Paper style) is this:

1: Place/Frame the basic rounded-corner rectangle in your field of view.
2: Hit Place again, and select the rounded-corner rectangle.
3: Hit the keyboard letter “d” about 10 times.

The resulting product is a centered set of 10 rectangles that collectively look very dark.

If you want to move or resize there, simply select them all at once (not the top one), and use the Zebra.

This works. It obviously adds unseeable resources to the presentation, but I’m guessing that these are not big hogs of space (but I don’t know).

    Try it out.

  35. Hi, I found your blog via Yahoo while searching for something else but your post / blog looks very interesting for me.

  36. rlengacher says:

I used your tips to make a Prezi about the Earth’s Interior layers. There are a few issues with my background image disappearing when I zoom way in, but my students really understood the scale and relationships much better. Thanks for such an incredible tool and for the tips we need to use it effectively.

  37. Sandra Rogers says:

You have a spelling/grammar error on the “free path” section of your tips presentation. You say you can return to “you” path, you mean to say “your” path, I believe.

I love this presentation format, an obvious relief to conference attendees but also to my ppt fatigued students. They all thank you as well. Thank you.

  38. Rebecca says:

I am enjoying Prezi, but I do have a question. Is there any way to zoom on a frame rather than just the text within that frame? I am having problems with the zoom on a couple of different “stops” on the path. Can you point me in the right direction? Thank you!

  39. todd says:

zoli… is it possible now, or will it be in the future, to add sound to a prezi. for example, if i publish a prezi (as you have in your blog), and want to record my vocal presentation over it so others can view and hear it anytime, is that possible?
    thanks!

    • Zoli Radnai says:

You can add voiceover to your prezis in 2 ways right now.

      - Prezi’s solution is quite simple. Convert your sound files to .flv video format (you can do this with a video editor tool, by adding 1 image to cover your sound, this is the way people add music to YouTube) and upload them to Prezi. Please see more here: http://prezi.com/learn/insert-sound/preview/ Once you have created the video format of the sound file, you can convert it with a free online tool like http://.zamzar.com to .flv format. Here is an example http://prezi.com/learn/insert-sound/preview/

      - Another solution: capture your prezi as you click through or autoplay with a screencast tool (Like Camtasia or Jing) and export it in a video format. Then you can import the video file to a video editor and record your sound for it.

I hope this information was helpful.

  40. Pastor says:

I would like to know if it is possible to resize de width, height and thickness of elements , i mean arrows, frames and stuff… and is there a way to change text to a specific color, or make it bold, or ithalics, underlined…? would I have to buy a pro license for that or is it a default and no-change format? thanks

    • Zoli Radnai says:

      - yes. select elements in Write mode, and you will get the Zebra tool on the top. You can use it to manipulate elements. please see more here: prezi.com/learn

      - There is no way now to manipulate the font colors, and types separate from the styles we provide. All of our licenses include the same editor interface. There are no bonus editor features for Pros. Please check our licenses here: prezi.com/profile/signup

  41. Gerd says:

I’ve been using prezi for two months now and I really like it. As a teacher I also showed it to some of my students and implemented a couple of their Shakespeare presentations in a prezi.
Now if they look for it, they find a lot of prezis containing the word shakespeare in their titles, but a lot of them are rubbish.
I think it is a major disadvantage that prezis made with the free version are automatically public. So there are a lot of prezis with only one picture or word in them or even the title “open me” because people try out something but forget to delete it afterwards.
Couldn’t these mere attempts be hidden somehow?

  42. Mau says:

After determining a path with captured views, is there a way of hiding the brackets that show it’s a captured view?
If I place a pic over it all, and send it to the back, not all brackets become hidden…can’t really figure out why…
    Thanks

  43. Dan says:

Just fyi in the Prezi Tips slide show under the “A Free Path” part there is a little typo. You wrote the word you instead of your.

  44. Robin says:

I just started prezi for my school project. But i just realized a guy in my class stole it, how can I make my powerpoint NOT viewed by other’s under their name?

    • Zoli Radnai says:

      Hi Robin,

Shame on the thief. What kind of account you have? Do you have an EDU Enjoy account or use the Pubic one? You can check it on the left sidebar of your My page. With the free EDU enjoy account you can create private prezis that cannot be seen by others.

  45. JT says:

Can I upload and convert a powerpoint or OneNote doc into a prezi? There is a lot of content, graphics, etc in those formats and would be good to at least have them available as a starting point. Right now I’m copying, saving, and inserting.

  46. paul roemer says:

I tried the answer to grouping and moving entire set of objects and the only think that moved is the rectangle from Frame. Is there another rectangle I should use? I have the education version.

Hi, there is a very simple solution to this. You can group select whole prezis, or parts of them and move/rotate/scale together by pressing and holding the shift key on your keyboard, while dragging rectangle around the required objects with the mouse.)

  47. Karen says:

    Hi,

Can you upload sound files to prezi?

    Thanks

    Karen

  48. Alyssia says:

What about putting music in the background, if you can’t already do that?

  49. nick luchetti says:

Is there any way to control the speed of the zooming to diminish vertigo??

    • Zoli Radnai says:

      Hi Nick,

No transition speed in the Prezi path is not adjustable. What you can do however is to place things closer to each other and other elements further. This will give the effect of faster and slower transitions.

  50. Dear Zoli,

Thanks for your tips. I sort of remember that a new feature was the copy-paste between prezis, am I wrong?
The only way I see how to use the reuse functionality is to download a local copy where I can now upload individual files to my own prezi. I find that less than optimal: the grouping and positioning is lost.
Thanks for your time and advice, best regards, Ch.M. Univ. Montpellier 2
