In the lead-up to World Mental Health Day, it’s crucial to keep in mind just how prevalent mental illness is — at least 10 percent of the world’s population is affected, and in the US alone, 50 percent of Americans will be diagnosed with a mental illness at some point in their lives. To help you better manage mental health — both for yourself and people you know — we’ve compiled some insightful Prezi videos as part of World Mental Health Day.

Strategies to disrupt mental illness stigma

Even though a large percentage of the world is affected — either directly or indirectly — by a mental health condition, there’s still often a stigma attached to mental illness. Zachary Burton, the co-founder of The Manic Monologues, explores how devastating and deadly this stigma can be in his Prezi video.

He also details several strategies you can use to start disrupting the stigma around mental illness, including educating yourself, being mindful of your word choice, focusing on empowerment, and providing support when possible. Keep these strategies in mind for World Mental Health Day and beyond:

When your day feels rough, HALT

We’ve all had those days where everything seems to annoy, upset, or frustrate us. But before you say or do anything in response to those feelings, strength-based psychologist Dr. Debi Lynes recommends that you HALT. HALT stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, and is a reminder to assess whether any (or all) of these factors are contributing to your negative emotions. Watch her Prezi video for advice on identifying these factors and how to address them in a healthy way:

Ways to maintain mental health

Keeping an eye on your mental well-being is important in the best of times, but it’s become even more crucial now that many people are stuck at home. Katya Veleva, a Mentoring Lead for Women in BIM, has been feeling the same stresses. In her Prezi video, she shares some of the little rituals she’s put in place to help her stay mentally healthy, such as limiting news intake, finishing work at a set time, and meditating.

And if the rituals aren’t enough to keep you from feeling overwhelmed, Katya also provides useful resources and additional steps to help. Watch her video for more insights:

World Mental Health Day is a good time to look closely at your routines, actions, and mindset to make sure you’re taking a measured and productive approach when addressing mental illness. While these videos offer a unique and helpful perspective, everyone manages their mental health differently.
